Barracuda Networks Launches Barracuda SSL VPN Following Acquisition of Reputable SSL VPN Provider
2008-11-18
New Product to Leverage 3SP?s Commercial SSL Explorer Technology in an Easy-to-Use Appliance

CSI 2008, Washington D.C., Nov. 17, 2008 ? (Booth # 217) Barracuda Networks Inc. today launched the Barracuda SSL VPN following the acquisition of 3SP, maker of the popular SSL Explorer solution. The new Barracuda SSL VPN will combine 3SP?s proven technology with Barracuda Networks? expertise in delivering trusted security solutions that are affordable for organizations of all sizes and business types.

?The 3SP technology is a strong complement to our existing network security product portfolio, so this acquisition was a natural fit for us,? said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. ?We believe Barracuda Networks? expansive channel reach and strong worldwide reputation, especially in the SMB market, will enable us to quickly emerge as a leading SSL VPN provider.?

Complete Security for Remote Access
The Barracuda SSL VPN is an integrated hardware and software solution enabling secure, clientless remote access to internal network resources from any Web browser. Designed for access by remote or mobile workers, the Barracuda SSL VPN provides customers with comprehensive access control to internal network shares, internal Web sites, and other intranet applications. The Barracuda SSL VPN integrates with third-party authentication mechanisms to control user access levels and provide single sign-on.

?While the benefits of clientless deployment and an end user remote access portal are often well understood, we find it surprising that SSL VPN technology has not been as readily adopted by mid-sized organizations,? said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. ?As with all Barracuda Networks solutions, we have optimized the delivery of a very sophisticated technology in an easy to use and deploy form factor suitable for organizations of any size.?

In addition to simplifying remote access connectivity, the Barracuda SSL VPN also enables administrators to tightly control user access through a range of authentication mechanisms, including third-party authentication services such as Active Directory, LDAP, and RADIUS. Further, administrators can layer security by enforcing the use of PIN numbers, hardware tokens, client certificates and other secure authentication mechanisms.

?Comprehensive security and auditing features allow administrators to easily monitor resource access and enforce granular user and group access to applications and services,? said Pao.

The Barracuda SSL VPN also leverages trusted virus and threat protections available with other Barracuda Networks products. Any files uploaded during a VPN session to network file shares or internal Web sites are scanned for viruses and other malware to prevent infections of critical network resources. The latest virus and application definitions are delivered to the Barracuda SSL VPN on a continuous basis via the Barracuda Energize Updates subscription.

Continued Support for 3SP Customers
3SP, a company based in Nottingham, UK, developed the free and open source SSL Explorer technology, which has had over 275,000 downloads of the main product distribution since it was released in August 2004. In addition, the award-winning SSL Explorer Enterprise commercial solution has hundreds of customers worldwide. As part of the acquisition, Barracuda Networks will continue to support all 3SP customers. Barracuda Networks also plans to increase investment in product development in SSL VPN technology and all of 3SP?s employees have joined the Barracuda Networks team.

This acquisition is the second successful corporate acquisition for Barracuda Networks in November 2008. Earlier this month, the company announced the acquisition of BitLeap, an innovative provider of local and offsite data backup and disaster recovery solutions, and the subsequent launch of the Barracuda Backup Service in North America.

Barracuda SSL VPN is available in three models with prices starting at $1,499 with no per user fees. International pricing and availability varies depending on region. For more information, please visit www.barracudanetworks.com/sslvpn.
