Provider Change With AuthInfo Available As From 9 December 2008

02.12.2008 - As from Tuesday, 9 December 2008, DENIC and the DENIC
members will make available a new procedure to domain holders who want to change
their provider. The central feature of this new procedure is the transmission of
a password. Following international practice, DENIC has given it the name
AuthInfo. The advantage of the AuthInfo procedure is that the communication
channels are reduced to a minimum, which makes the procedure easier, quicker and
even a little more secure than the asynchronous procedure used to date.
To carry out a provider change with the new procedure, the domain holder must do
two things: First he/she requests an AuthInfo from his/her current provider and
has it recorded in the DENIC database. Once the AuthInfo is stored at DENIC, the
domain holder starts a provider change with his future provider and communicates
the AuthInfo to that provider. Validity of an AuthInfo is limited for security
reasons. It automatically expires after 30 days, and an AuthInfo also becomes
invalid once it has been used for a provider change. And the new procedure has
another advantage: Once the provider change procedure has been started the only
thing to be checked is if the AuthInfo communicated in the request and that
recorded in the DENIC database are identical. If that is the case, the provider
change is carried out without any further waiting times. So the domain is
transferred much quicker than in the past.
If the domain holder cannot request his/her current provider to obtain an
AuthInfo, DENIC offers an alternative solution. The domain holder can get his
future provider to initiate generation of an AuthInfo by DENIC. In that case,
the AuthInfo is sent by registered letter to the domain holder's address
recorded in the DENIC database. The domain holder must only communicate the
AuthInfo to his/her new provider, so that he/she can start the provider change
request.
