Hosting News Sony Pictures Entertainment Plugs Into 100% Green Power Program At 365 Main's Arizona Data Center 2008-04-29
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., APRIL 29, 2008 – 365 Main announced today that 100
percent renewable energy is now available for customers in its data center in
Chandler, Ariz., via the Salt River Project’s Earthwise Energy Program, which
produces clean energy from renewable resources such as the sun, wind, earth’s
heat, flowing water and even decomposing garbage in landfills.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, is the
first 365 Main customer to sign up for 100 percent renewable energy from SRP’s
EarthWise Energy program at 365 Main’s Arizona data center.
“Switching from traditional to clean power is one of the most significant
changes that data centers can make to dramatically reduce their carbon
footprints,” said J.P. Balajadia, senior vice-president of engineering for 365
Main. “We are pleased that Sony Pictures is demonstrating its commitment to
minimizing its environmental impact by choosing the EarthWise Energy Program for
its servers and other IT equipment in our facility.”
“We are focused on pursuing sustainable policies that help reduce energy
consumption, which makes sense from both an environmental and economic
standpoint,” said Rick Hopfer, senior vice president and CIO, Sony Pictures
Entertainment. “We are pleased that we are able to participate in a renewable
energy program through our data center in Arizona.”
“365 Main is leading the way for other data centers in their commitment to clean
renewable energy,” said Lori Singleton, Manager, Sustainability Initiatives and
Technologies, Salt River Project. “We commend 365 Main for being the first data
center in SRP’s service territory to take advantage of the EarthWise Energy
Program.”
365 Main is also working with regional utilities to bring similar green energy
programs to the company’s five other data centers.
According to 365 Main and SRP estimates, Sony Pictures’ selection of the
EarthWise Energy Program instead of traditional power sources could help the
company reduce the carbon footprint of its deployment in 365 Main’s Arizona data
center by up to 19,710 tons over the next 3 years, equal to removing nearly
3,240 cars from the roads.
Other Recent Energy-Efficient Steps Taken by 365 Main
365 Main’s work with EarthWise follows other energy-efficient steps, such as the
company’s participation in the Savings by Design program, backed in part by
PG&E, which resulted in energy-efficient design improvements to 365 Main’s
Oakland data center that are anticipated to reduce energy use by approximately
1.67 million kilowatt hours annually, or enough energy to power approximately
242 homes each year.
365 Main also recently announced that the company has become an ENERGY STAR
partner and is working with the EPA in conjunction with other organizations to
develop an ENERGY STAR rating standard for data centers. As an ENERGY STAR
partner, 365 Main agrees to measure, track and benchmark its energy performance
where possible by using tools such as those offered by ENERGY STAR, develop and
implement a plan consistent with ENERGY STAR guidelines to achieve energy
savings, as well as educate staff and the public about achievements with ENERGY
STAR.
